Conference members met at the conference hotel at 18.00 for an informal welcome by our host, Professor Armando Oliveira, and introductions prior to a ‘dine-around’ in Lisbon

SUNDAY 28.09.03
Conference members were taken on a guided walk through Lisbon, conducted by Dr Lucio Sousa, from the conference hotel to the St George Castle, where they given a reception by representatives of the Municipality of Lisbon. Members were free to explore the city in the afternoon.

The Annual Meeting of the Association of European Migration Institutions was opened formally at 17.00 at the Centro de Estudios das Migracoes e das Relacoes Interculturais (CEMRI) in the Universidade Aberta (Open University).

The Director of CEMRI, Professor Maria Beatriz Rocha Trindade gave a keynote lecture on ‘An Overview of Portuguese Migrations Tables’.

The lecture was followed by the launch of the first volume of the AEMI Journal. The Chairman congratulated the Editor, Hans Storhaug, on having brought the project to fruition and the Editor thanked all those involved, particularly the contributors. A copy of the Journal was presented to Professor Rocha Trindade.

AEMI ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The Annual General Meeting of the Association of European Migration Institutions was convened at CEMRI, Lisbon and called to order at 2.30 pm by Chairman Brian Lambkin

1. Election of presiding officer for the General Assembly
The Chairman moved that Knut Djupedal, immediate past Chairman, be elected presiding officer of the business meeting. The motion was agreed.

Mr Djupedal then called the roll of institutional members.

2. Chairman’s Report for 2002-2003
The Chairman tabled his report and spoke to it, highlighting the main achievements of the year: the launch of the first volume of the AEMI Journal, and preparation of a major funding application to be made to the EU Culture 2000 Programme for a ‘European Migration Heritage Project’.
The Chairman moved the adoption of the report. The meeting adopted the motion.

3. Financial Statements and Accounts for 2002
The Secretary and Treasurer, Henning Bender presented his report.
Auditor’s letter
HB reminded members of the correct method of payment of subscriptions (to avoid the Association being responsible for payment of transfer fee)
Budget and Account 2002
The Secretary and Treasured moved the adoption of the report. The meeting adopted the motion.

4. Budget 2003 and Account 2003 (preliminary)
Subscriptions from Liverpool and Rome outstanding.
The three Board meetings held in the last year cost a total of 6,000 €, 4,000 of which had been paid for by Centre de Documentation, Luxembourg.

5. Proposed Budget 2004
The Secretary and Treasurer explained that the proposed budget depended upon the proposal (to be considered later) to raise the annual subscription from 100 to 150 €.

6. Appointment of Auditor
The Secretary and Treasurer proposed that Ulf Beijbom be reappointed as auditor for the coming year. This was agreed.

7. Annual Subscription
The Chairman introduced the proposal that the annual subscription be raised from 100 to 150 euros. Discussion centred on the question as to the possible deterrent effect this might have on existing and potential members. The Board was urged to use its discretion to ensure that no existing member was deterred from continuing in membership of the Association, and no potential member was deterred from applying for membership simply on grounds of financial hardship.
Subject to this proviso, the proposal to increase the annual subscription was agreed unanimously.

8. Election of Journal Editor as Board Member
The Chairman proposed Hans Storhaug, should be serve two further years as a member of the Board in his capacity as Editor of the Journal. This was agreed. (The three year term of the present Board will end in 2005).

9. Projects
Wolfgang Grams gave an update on progress of the Bremerhaven project. The project (to build a facility catering for 200,000 visitors per year through a Public Private partnership) is currently ‘on hold’ but it is expected that it will proceed shortly after new Federal elections in Bremen. He also showed the Heritage Map which he had recently published which shows migration-related information in relation to the region of north Germany in which Routes to the Roots is particularly active. Copies of the map were available to members of the meeting at 5 euros (normally 5 dollars)

Knut Djupedal tabled information about a seminar to be held at his institution in June 2004 and invited members to attend and contribute. He reported on contacts he has had with the University of Riga which is engaged in a project on attitude change in immigrants. A seminar programme will be part of this project.

Driss Al Yazami reported that a new National Museum of the History of Migration is to be established in Paris, located in the former Museum of the French Empire. Driss offered on behalf of his institution to host the 2005 Annual Meeting of the Association.

Olavi Koivukangas reported on progress of the project to establish a new Museum of Emigration in Finland. He also commented on the value of adding a regular ‘newsletter’ to the Association website.

Per Nordahl reported on a project involving a number of museums concerned with emigration from South Africa, being funded by the Swedish/South African Cultural Fund. It will be launched early in 2004. He also reported on a Benchmarking Conference on the relevance of historical experience to current affairs, attended by participants from Sweden, Wales and Slovenia.

Wincie Johannisdottir reported on progress on the e-content project which she and her colleague presented to the Annual Meeting in Stavanger. The aim of this project is to create a ‘portal’ for participating institutions to use an IT template for giving access to migration-related information of all kinds.

10. New Members
The Secretary-Treasurer presented the following applicant institutions:

Prospective Member
Suzanne Branciforte gave a short presentation about the project to establish a museum of emigration in Genoa, Italy. It will be located in medieval buildings on the quayside, close to the maritime station and will have close links to a new maritime museum. It is expected that there will be a launch of the project on Columbus Day, 2004, as part of the city’s celebrations as European City of Culture.

11. Next Meetings
It was agreed that the next meeting of the Association in 2004 will be held in Växjö, Sweden and will be hosted by The Swedish Emigration Institute.
Offers to host the 2005 meeting have been received from the Norwegian Emigrant Museum, Ottestad, Norway and Generiques, Paris.
The Annual General Meeting concluded at 4.00 pm

Presentation of AEMI Culture 2000 Project
The Annual General Meeting was followed by a presentation of the AEMI ‘European Migration Heritage Project’, given by the Chairman on behalf of the Board.
The discussion which followed the presentation concluded at 5.45 pm.
